The Capital Governorate

 

It is the largest governorate in terms of its population, and the third largest after Ma’an and Mafraq governorates, in terms of its area. However, the Capital is the most important governorate and the central nerve of the state of Jordan. It is the home of the Jordanian significant state institutions, the governmental departments, and the Parliament, which is located at Al-Abdali. Its elevation is around 750 m above sea level.

The city is located in the middle of the Kingdom, and in a region of several hills. Initially, the city was established in the valleys; however, when it became condensed, its people started to go higher to mountains’ feet, and continued to stretch it and go higher over the hills’ tops up to its edges to cover over 20 hills.

Amman is considered the commercial and administrative hub of the Kingdom, and its economic and educational heart. It has become a point of attraction to many Arabs for its unique position and modern architecture; it annually attracts many tourists from Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, neighboring and close Arab countries, and specifically, many families from the Arabian Gulf countries. In general, tourism attraction spots in Amman are increasing, especially health and treatment centers. As Amman is having a strategic location in Greater Syria and the Middle East, it is controlling the national economy and powers 90% of investment at the national level.

Geographical Location:

The Capital Governorate is situated at a middle location among Zarqa, Balqa, Madaba, Karak, and Ma’an governorates. Its boundaries extend to the Jordanian-Saudi borders.
The Capital Governorate consists of (9) counties, (4) districts, (8) municipalities, and (22) regions within the Greater Amman Municipality.

Population:

  • Governorate’s population is (4007526) inhabitants.

  • Governorate’s area: (7579.2 km2).

  • Population density: (528.8) inhabitants per square kilometer.

Governorate’s Relative Features:

  • Central geographical location among the Kingdom’s governorates.

  • Attractive tourism environment infrastructure in the form of hotels of all categories, especially 5 star-hotels.

  • Wide commercial business transactions and the increase in establishing shopping centers, i.e. malls and large commercial centers.

  • The home of 48% of the economic and commercial institutions at the national level.

  • The availability of universities, colleges, and specialized academic institutes.

  • The fast growth of the construction sector.

  • The availability of various athletic and cultural centers.
